Hoddle at Spurs
Hoddle's name is tied to Tottenham Hotspur more than any other club. He came through at White Hart Lane and became the creative heart of the side, the player who could pick a pass from deep that most of his team-mates hadn't even spotted.
- Years at Spurs: 1975–1987
- Appearances and goals: 490 total appearances and 110 goals
- Major honours with the club: 2 x FA Cup 81 and 82 - UEFA Cup 84
Ask a Spurs supporter why they hold him in such affection and it comes down to technique. Passing range, a sweet first touch and a knack for the spectacular. Easier to watch than describe.
Hoddle for England
His England story is a more mixed one, and plenty of punters will tell you he deserved more caps than he got. That's an opinion, not a statistic, so make of it what you will.
- England caps and goals: 53 Caps, 8 Goals
- Major tournaments played: World Cup 82, 86, EUROS 80, 88
- Later role as England manager: Managed England in the 1998 World Cup in France
For the wider history of England shirts from the era, our piece on the England shirts that still matter from Italia 90 is a good companion read.
The retro shirts
Both Hoddle prizes we've run were retro designs rather than current kits: a retro England shirt and a retro Tottenham Hotspur shirt, each signed by Glenn Hoddle. Retro shirts take you straight back to a particular era, often the one in which the player was at his peak.
What collectors look for
Collectors weigh up a few things, and it's not an exact science. We won't put a price on any shirt here, because we can't stand behind a valuation.
- Authenticity. Proof the signature is genuine matters more than almost anything else. We've written a separate guide on how to tell if a signed football shirt is genuine, and how ours are authenticated.
- Condition. A clean shirt with a clear signature is generally preferred to one that's faded or creased.
- The signature itself. Placement and clarity both count, and a signature that sits cleanly on the shirt tends to display better.
- Meaning to you. For plenty of people, a Spurs or England shirt tied to a favourite player is about the memory, not the market.
